The guinea pig, despite being a species native to the Andean region of South America and having singular importance as a basic source of animal protein in rural sectors and those with lower purchasing power, has not been properly studied and its breeding is still largely empirical; concepts that have no scientific basis are still maintained. For example, the belief in the genetic relationship between the number of toes and the prolificacy of mothers and the weight of their offspring is deeply rooted. |
