The genus Cinchona belonging to the family Rubiaceae is of great importance for humanity, being more known its specimens as Quina or Cascarilla. It became popular worldwide since the seventeenth century for its antimalarial use and febrifuge properties that has its bark. The excessive demand of the husk, caused the irrational exploitation of the species that comprise this genus, being more affected the Cinchona officinalis L. to present a bark with more alkaloids. The mountain cloud forests of the tropics are considered very fragile ecosystems and run the risk of disappearing due to the great pressure they are subjected to due to anthropic factors. The forested areas of Peru are not the exception to this problem, nor those where there are individuals of husk. In the present article it was determined that in the study area the Cinchona officinalis L. plays a very important role in the structure and functioning of the forest, presenting the highest Importance Value Index (23.1%). The natural regeneration of Quina has as possible natural limitation the dispersion of seeds and environmental factors for germination, but this regeneration is being very affected by anthropic factors. |
