Aim: the present study was made in order to obtain the skeleton characteristics of the peruvian breed guinea pig using X-rays, and to determine the changes due to breeding when compared with the unimproved guinea pig. Methods: thirty one male animals of 16 weeks of age divided into two groups (peruvian breed and unimproved breed with 16 and 15 specimens each) were evaluated; both groups shared the same environmental conditions, diet and management. The animals were manipulated under sedation, the X-ray views were: ventrodorsal projection and lateral projection. The skeleton of the head, flue, ulna, third cervical vertebra, twelfth thoracic vertebra, fourth lumbar vertebra, pelvis, femur and tibia were evaluated; the numbers of cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae were also evaluated. Results: the most outstanding results were found on the peruvian breed, which had a bigger growth on: Cervical vertebra width 56.57%, flue external diameter 31.44%, caudal width of the pelvis 51.32%, tibia external diameter 32.28%. The weight gain in the animals was also evaluated and then a comparison was made obtaining: 171.40% higher for the peruvian breed. Conclusions: the study shows that selective breeding in the peruvian breed guinea pigs has produced a noticeable change in weight and length when compared to the unimproved animals. Growth has been proportional determining a shape similar to a rectangular parallelepiped, characteristic of a meat-producing animal. The cervical vertebrae were developed proportioned to the head growth, causing the shortening of the longitudinal axis of the breed. |
